HARRY MILLER MIDDLE SCHOOL

ANNOUNCEMENT FORM

Today’s DateFriday, June 4, 2021

Today is orange shirt day and thank you to all of you who are wearing orange in support of Indigenous Peoples across Canada.  A reminder to staff that we will remain in homeroom classes until 8:45 (an announcement will be made) to discuss the significance of wearing orange and what is happening in our world right now.  Please refer to the articles and videos that were sent to you earlier this week to guide your discussions if needed.

As Disability Awareness Week comes to an end, ask yourself this question: Is it always easy to see that someone has a disability?

Many disabilities cannot be seen; for example, deafness and learning disabilities. Also, someone can have a mobility disability even if they do not use a wheelchair, and someone may have a vision disability even if they do not use a white sensing cane or seeing eye-dog.

The deadline to return all library books is today! Please hand in your books to your homeroom teacher following announcements or drop them off in the drop box outside the library door, before the end of the day.  Students with unreturned books after today, will receive a fine for the cost of the book

Pride Month Fact: The rainbow pride flag was designed by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978 in San Francisco. Each of the colours represents different things. Red is life, orange is healing, yellow is sunlight, green is nature, blue is harmony and peace, and purple stands for spirit. The flag has been updated in recent years to be more inclusive to the trans community and people of colour.

Joyful June: Reframe a worry and try to find a helpful way to think about it.

A few students from 7 Hayden will be selling 1” pins from Monday, June 7 until Wednesday, June 9. All profits will go to the Atlantic Wildlife Institute. Wildlife pins are 1$ each and for 1.50$, you can order a pin with a photo or drawing of your choice. For the specialized pins, please give a piece of paper with what you want on your pin, your name, and your class written on it. Also, a note to teachers, it would be very helpful if the money for the wildlife pins, specialized pins, and written requests are kept separate. We will collect the orders each day, and the pins will be delivered to classes in 1-2 weeks after the last orders are received. For everyone’s safety, each class’s pins will be quarantined for at least two days. Thank you!

Bet you didn’t know Friday:

Who invented hockey is hotly contested but one theory is that it was invented by the Mohawks. Hundreds of years ago, Jesuit priests wrote about the Mohawks playing with a stick and a piece of frozen ice embedded with mud and stones. According to the Jesuit journals, when a player was struck by the “puck” they yelled “Aukie!” meaning, ouch. Other inventions credited to First Nations include the canoe and kayak, darts, lacrosse (forerunner to hockey) petroleum jelly, cough syrup.
